Examples of mental processes

  • memory
  • perception
  • attention
  • language
  • thinking
  • decision making
  • problem solving

These processes come under the label of cognition

Our experiences create the mental representations of the world that we develop.
Where do these experiences come from?
From the world around us.

Interaction between biology and cognition
visual stimuli from environment ->breakdown in visual processing (loss of vision) -> reduction of visual stimuli -> spontaneous firing by 'unused' neurons -> process of integrated stream of information is interrupted -> sudden release of images -> mind tries to organize these but is not very successful
